The Redmi Note 9 5G is here and with MediaTek’s Dimensity 800U SoC. The budget handset also offers up to 8 GB of RAM, a 5,000 mAh battery and four cameras. The Redmi Note 9 5G starts at CNY 1,299 (~US$197), although it is unknown whether Xiaomi will release the device globally.
The Redmi Note 9 5G may look like the newly-announced Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G, but the two are very different devices. The two are different sizes for one, with the Redmi Note 9 5G featuring a smaller 6.53-inch display. Xiaomi has restricted the Redmi Note 9 5G to 60 Hz too, unlike the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G. The former also has a larger 5,000 mAh battery, but one that can only be charged at up to 22.5 W.
Additionally, Xiaomi has equipped the Redmi Note 9 5G with a Dimensity 800U, MediaTek’s new mid-range chipset. The device comes with 6 GB or 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB of storage though, as does the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G. However, Xiaomi has also included a triple rear-facing camera array with a 48 MP primary sensor, which is a significant downgrade from the 108 MP quad-camera array found in the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G.
Its 13 MP front-facing camera is another downgrade from the Pro model, although the Redmi Note 9 5G has a 3.5 mm headphone jack in its favour. Accordingly, the Redmi Note 9 5G costs less than the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G, with prices starting at CNY 1,299 (~US$197) for 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Xiaomi charges CNY 200 (~US$30) more for 8 GB of RAM and a price of CNY 1,699 (~US$258) for 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. The Redmi Note 9 5G will be available in three colours, too.
