Philadelphia Police Reportedly Thwart Plot To Attack Vote Counting Center

A plot to attack a Philadelphia convention center where votes are being counted was prevented Thursday night by Philadelphia police, according to multiple news reports, as tensions grow over mail-in vote counting after continuous false insistence by trailing incumbent Donald Trump that the process is fraudulent.

Key Facts

Police received a tip that there was a group traveling from out-of-state to attack the Pennsylvania Convention Center, where votes are being counted, according to reports.

The group was armed, according to a Philadelphia Inquirer reporter, and traveled in a Hummer that had a QAnon sticker on its back window.

At least one man was seen being handcuffed outside the convention center.

Police were made aware of the plot around 10 p.m. Thursday, according to KYW-TV.

The Convention Center was the site of tense protests throughout the evening Thursday between supporters of Trump and those of Democratic challenger Joe Biden.

Philadelphia police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Forbes.

What To Watch For

Trump’s lead in Pennsylvania has almost entirely disappeared. His lead was around 700,000 as of 7 a.m. Wednesday, but by early Friday morning it had dropped to just 18,229. If Trump cannot hold on to the state, Biden will reach enough electoral votes to win the election.

Key Background

Philadelphia has become the prime target of Trump’s baseless claims of rampant voter fraud, as his once-sizable lead in the Pennsylvania vote count has evaporated as mail-in balloting from Philadelphia continues to be counted. Pennsylvania is one of several states where Trump has made a formal legal challenge to the vote-counting process, even sending personal attorney and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani to Philadelphia for a news conference on Wednesday. On Thursday, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court delivered a minor legal victory for the Trump camp, ordering the state to segregate all ballots received between November 10 and November 12 after the Trump campaign challenged the state’s decision to extend its November 9 deadline for receiving ballots.
