Lil Nas X joked that Saturday Night Live is “going to hell” after the show aired a sketch that showed the rapper performing a lap dance for God.
The show opened last night with Oops, You Did It Again, a fictitious talk show hosted by Chloe Fineman as singer Britney Spears that puts a spotlight on the “social pariahs of the week.”
Chris Redd appeared as Lil Nas X to address the controversy over the release of the music video for his song “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” and limited edition Nike sneakers dubbed “Satan Shoes.”
Fineman’s Spears introduced the Redd’s Lil Nas X by noting he has been “attacked by the rare combo of the Catholic Church and Nike.”
Asked about the criticism of the shoes and Nike’s lawsuit in response to them, Redd responded: “I don’t know why Nike is so mad. Their whole thing is just do it… well, I did it.”
Fineman’s Spears then notes that people are “freaking out” about the rapper’s latest music video which shows him “ride down a stripper police to Hell and then twerk on the Devil.”
“Why are they so upset?” she asks.
Redd responds that it’s because they are “closed-minded idiots.”
He continues: “People are afraid of me because I’m different, but really I’m just your typical gay Black country rap sneaker entrepreneur.”
“What would you say to the religious folks who are mad that you gave Satan a lap dance?” Fineman’s Spears then asked Redd.
“I would say, you know that wasn’t the real Satan, right? It was a dude in a Halloween devil costume because the real Satan doesn’t do, like, music videos so maybe chill,” he responds.
“Would you be willing to give a lap dance to God, just to even things out?” Fineman’s Spears asks.
Redd agrees and Fineman brings out “God,” portrayed by Mikey Day.
Redd then performs a brief lap dance, before Fineman’s Spears declares: “Wow! Happy Easter everyone!”
Lil Nas X shared a screengrab of Redd dancing on Day on Twitter shortly after the sketch aired. He wrote alongside it: “snl going to hell.”
Elsewhere in the cold open, Fineman’s Spears brought out Pepe Le Pew, played by Kate McKinnon, and Pete Davidson as Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz.
Gaetz is “as we’d say in the early 2000s, a hot mess and as we’d say today, a full-on sex pest,” Fineman’s Spears said as she introduced the scandal-hit congressman.
